Five months after a by-law banning spitting on the streets in Enfield was brought in, three people are waiting to be prosecuted.
The new regulation was the first in the country when it was introduced on December 17, 2013.
More than 4,800 people had signed a petition in support of the by-law, which was championed by the Enfield Over 50s Forum.
Currently, three people are awaiting prosecution.
Progress in bringing in the law started in 2012 but seemed to have stalled in October that year, as the Government’s Department for Communities and Local Government called for more evidence to ban spitting in public.
But campaigners could rejoice in July 2013 when Secretary of State Eric Pickles gave the go-ahead to criminalise spitting in public across the borough.
