A man who beat a pensioner to the ground in a “sickening and completely unprovoked” attack at a bus stop has been jailed.

Michael Douglas, of Swaythling Close, Upper Edmonton, was caught by CCTV cameras kicking and punching the 67-year-old man in the head several times after knocking him to the floor outside Seven Sisters Tube station in High Road, Tottenham.

Douglas only stopped when a passer-by intervened. Footage showed him running away and laughing.

The attack took place at 3.30am on Saturday, March 22, as the victim waited for a bus outside the tube station on his way home from a family gathering.

CCTV operatives called police and the ambulance service to the scene of assault and the victim was taken to hospital with facial and head injuries. He has since been discharged.

Douglas was arrested soon after the attack and he pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm in March.

On April 22, he was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Detective Constable Mike Scullion, who is investigating, said: "This was a sickening and completely unprovoked assault on an elderly gentleman who had no chance of defending himself.

“Even when the defenceless victim was on the ground, a cowardly Douglas continued to violently punch and kick him in the head several times.

"Douglas, who has shown no remorse for his actions and gave no explanation for it, was captured on CCTV running away from the scene and laughing.

"His sentenced is welcomed and the public can rest assure that this violent individual is off the streets."
