Three homes in Redhill will be among 21 opening their doors around the county this month in the Surrey Green Homes event.

Running on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, from 10am to 5pm, eco-home owners around Surrey will be welcoming in members of the public to show energy-saving technologies in action in the event organised by Action Surrey.

Action Surrey is a county-wide impartial energy advice centre, working with local councils to help residents save money on their energy bills, keep warm and reduce their environmental impact. The Surrey Green Homes event is part of the national Green Open Homes network which supports low carbon open homes events across the country. It is funded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and delivered by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) in partnership with Bristol Green.

Offering people a free chance to find out about the latest in energy-saving ideas and measures and to ask questions, Green Homes weekend visitors will learn how the home owners have made their properties cheaper to heat and more comfortable to live in.

Among the features on show in the Redhill homes will be solar panels, a condensing boiler, cavity wall insulation, a steam boiling tap, and solid floor insulation underlay with aerogel – as used on the space shuttle.

Other homes taking part include properties in Woking, Epsom, Godalming and Guildford.

Every resident who visits a Surrey Green Home will be able to enter a prize draw to win a free Green Deal Assessment worth £100. The Green Deal is designed to help residents finance and install energy-saving improvements to their homes.

A new way of paying for home energy improvements with no up-front cost, Green Deal finance offers a low interest, unsecured loan that is attached to the property and is paid back through the savings on energy bills, with the loan repayments calculated not to rise above the savings made.
