Thirty-five firefighters were called to a fire at a block of maisonettes in Woolwich this morning.

Six fire engines were needed to put out the blaze in Connaught Road at around 10.30am.

A maisonette on the fourth and fifth floors was badly damaged by the blaze. A woman escaped the property before the brigade arrived and there were no reports of any injuries.

Fire engines from Plumstead, Greenwich, Lee Green, Eltham and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire, which was brought under control by 12.15pm, is under investigation.
