Anerley residents have been advised to keep their windows shut following a huge tyre fire which burned through the night.

Three crews were called to wasteland in William Booth Road at around 8.45pm last night.

While the blaze was under control by 10.06pm, crews remained at the scene until 5am damping down hot patches.

The London Fire Brigade tweeted: “The tyre fire on wasteland in Anerley is producing a lot of thick black smoke.

“If you're in the area keep your doors and windows closed.”

A spokesman added: "A huge stack of tyres caught fire and when tyres catch fire it causes a lot of thick black smoke which is why we advised people to keep their doors and windows shut.

"The fire occurred during the fire brigade's strike and so it was contingency crews who attended."
