May is National Walking Month and Greenwich residents are encouraged to put their best foot forward and join in events.

There are 20 free guided walks on offer aiming to raise awareness of the health benefits of walking, co-ordinated by Living Streets, Greenwich Council and Charlton Athletic Community Trust.

Included in these are a wheelchair accessible walk on May 7 at 2pm, beginning at The Forum@Greenwich, in Trafalgar Road, with options for either a 15 or 30 minute walk available.

There is also a 'Leisurely Lollies' walk on May 14 at 10am kicking off at The Thames in Woolwich and accompanied by Greenwich Council’s school crossing patrol.

Plumstead GP and Executive Member of NHS Greenwich Clinical Commissioning Group Dr Ranil Perera said: "The health benefits of taking regular exercise are recognised by all GPs – and walking is one of the best, and cheapest, ways to do this.

"You don’t have to walk great distances to start to have an impact on your health.

"The key thing is to try and make it something you do regularly. You can walk alone, or with friends or family, and you can choose a distance and a pace that suits your lifestyle and your level of fitness."
