Members of a Synagogue heard the accounts of two Auschwitz escapees as part of commemorations of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Pinner Synagogue in Cecil Park heard from guest speakers Professor Gerta Vrbová and Rudi Vrba, wife of escapee Rudolph Vrba.

Rudolph Vrba with friend Alfred ‘Freddie’ Wetzler, escaped from the camp and travelled 11 days through Poland to alert the allies of the horrors taking place at the extermination camp.

The Mayor of Harrow and dignitaries representing many European countries, including the ambassadors of Albania and Hungary, were present at the ceremony.

There were also representatives from the embassies of Austria, Germany, Poland, Romania and the Slovak Republic.

The event also saw the lighting of memorial candles to mark the annual day of remembrance.
