A NEW national campaign to help older people has won backing from Richmondshire District Council.

The campaign, supported by Esther Rantzen, aims to tackle the issues of loneliness and isolation in later life as well as a lack of suitable accommodation.

A key element is the ‘Silver Line’ - a helpline which offers friendship calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week and also assists callers in locating projects in their local area.

The free confidential Silver Line number is 0800 470 8090 – and it works closely with the Samaritans and Action for Elder Abuse so vulnerable callers will receive the protection they may need.

Corporate director Colin Dales said: “Ensuring we have a supply of good quality accommodation designed for older people is also part of this campaign.

“This seeks to raise the profile of later life housing so older people are aware of the benefits it provides.”

He added: “As a council we need to recognise the housing needs of our older community in our local plans and ensure that they consider the viability issues associated with later life housing.”
