An Enfield woman has taken on the unenviable challenge of spending less than £1 a day on all her food and drink in aid of charity.
Tamsin Salfrais, 20 of Enfield Lock took on the Live Below the Line Challenge for five days to gain an insight into the living in extreme poverty.
The challenge is aimed to raise money for Save the Children which helped the world’s poorest families.
Ms Salfrais, a student at Brunel University said: “Before I took the challenge I genuinely didn’t think it would be that difficult but as the days went on it became almost impossible.”
A plan must be installed to ensure that you aren’t starving by the final day and Ms Salfrais admitted this was one of the hardest parts.
She said: “By the end I was just eating lentils which wasn’t fun but you get to appreciate how little some people have in the world and take for granted how much we have.
“I almost felt guilty when I was able to go back to enjoying food because millions of people don’t have that option, they have to live like that day-in-day-out.
“This experience has changed the way I use food and I am now much more conscious about throwing away food.”
Her shopping list included six eggs, a tin of sardines, three or four potatoes, onions, lentils and pita
Ms Salfrais has now encouraged other people to take part in the challenge.
She added: “I would definitely urge people to take it up and challenge yourself to see what other people have to go through.”
Ms Salfrais raised over £250 during her challenge for Save the Children.
