Pupils at Burhill School have been learning about all things skydiving, as three daring mothers prepare to take the plunge.

Clare Radford, Lisa Hunnisett and Mandy Kewley will jump from 10,000ft over the Salisbury Plains on Sunday, May 4, to help raise funds for the Hersham school’s parent teacher association.

To help pupils understand their challenge, the mums held a school assembly on April 22 along with encouraging children to build their own parachutes.

Each class was tasked with creating a parachute they thought could land an egg safely on the ground by considering gravity, mass and resistance.

This week, the parachutes were dropped from a crane, with three classes, ducklings in reception, owls in year 1 and swans in year 2, successfully creating parachutes up to the challenge.

Mrs Kewley said: “This event really has captured the inclusive spirit of the school and has created such excitement among children, parents and teachers.”

The mothers hope the skydive will raise £3,500, to buy a theatrical backdrop and stage lighting to use for school productions and nativities.

Sally Taylor, headteacher of Burhill Infants School, said “Parents and teachers work together as a team at Burhill, and yet again, the parents willingness to go above and beyond – quite literally in this case – astounds me.

“We are delighted to have such incredible support from our families.”
