Gurkha veterans invited to mark 100 years since First World War during Global Friendship Day in Tottenham
Gurkha veterans will be the guests of honour at a free public event in Tottenham commemorating 100 years since the start of the First World War.
Food and music will form part of the Global Friendship Day celebrations at The Selby Centre, in Selby Road, tomorrow (Tuesday), where this year’s theme marks the centenary of the anniversary.
The event, which starts at midday and ends at 4pm, will also mark 200 years since the signing of the Friendship Treaty between Nepal and the United Kingdom.
Headteachers and students from schools across the borough will take part in a tree planting event, and a ‘friendship bench’ made from recycled wood will be unveiled at the centre.
Sona Mahtani, CEO of the Selby Trust, said: “The brave people who fought in the First World War have enabled people from across the globe to live side by side, harmoniously.
“Given that Haringey has been home to a wide range of people from around the world, it is fitting that the Selby Centre is the location for the year’s celebrations.”
