This Is Local London: Free Greenwich walking events set for May Free Greenwich walking events set for May

A range of free walking events will take place across Greenwich borough throughout May as part of National Walking Month.

The initiative is coordinated nationally by campaign group Living Streets, which aims to make the streets safe, attractive and enjoyable spaces.

Locally, around 20 guided walks are taking place each week, allowing residents to enjoy some of the borough’s outdoor locations whilst reaping the benefits of walking.

Walks include:

  • Thames Path Evening Walk – Woolwich Arsenal to Charlton; 7 to 9pm on Thursday May 1
  • Photography Walk – Approximately 4 to 5 miles, from Sutcliffe Park, Kidbrooke, to Eltham Park South Café; 11.30am to 1.30pm on Monday May 5
  • Wheelchair Accessible Walk led by Greenwich Association for Disabled People – meeting at The Forum@Greenwich, Trafalgar Road, Greenwich, for a choice of 15 minute or 30 minute walk; 2pm on Wednesday May 7
  • Leisurely Lollies - Two mile walk along the Thames from Woolwich, accompanied by some of the Greenwich Council’s School Crossing Patrol, to finish with a cup of tea in Thamesmead; 10am on Wednesday May 14

Dr Ranil Perera, a Plumstead GP and executive member of NHS Greenwich Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The health benefits of taking regular exercise are recognised by all GPs – and walking is one of the best, and cheapest, ways to do this.

“You don’t have to walk great distances to start to have an impact on your health.

“The key thing is to try and make it something you do regularly. You can walk alone, or with friends or family, and you can choose a distance and a pace that suits your lifestyle and your level of fitness.

“The Walking Month activities are a great way for people to get started.”
