St George’s Healthcare NHS trust has been heaped with praise following a national inspection.

The trust, which includes St George’s Hospital, Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton, and St John’s Therapy Centre in Battersea, picked up ‘good’ ratings in 51 out of 62 areas.

It also achieved three ‘outstanding’ ratings for work in its intensive and critical care units.

Maternity services also picked up an 'outstanding' rating.

Following the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) rigorous inspection, only eight areas in the hospital were said to need improvement.

These included the End of Life Care Team and the parts of the Outpatient Department.

No areas of the hospital were reported as inadequate.

Miles Scott, chief executive at St George's, said: "I am delighted with our staff, and I am delighted with the excellence of their care.

"In the areas we have been classed as ‘good’, we are still striving to make further improvements.

"We want to get ourselves in a position where we are outstanding across the board."

The CQC published its findings on April 24 after carrying out the four-day inspection in February.

The commission focused on whether services are safe, caring, effective, responsive and well led.

Up to 50 inspectors were on site at one time, who would also turn up on unnannounced visits in the weeks that followed.

Inspections were carried out by local and national independent experts, such as clinical consultants, directors of nursing and chief executives of other hospitals.

Members of the public were also part of the team.

The Tooting MP Sadiq Khan said: "No hospital is perfect but in Tooting we are very lucky to have St George's on our doorstep.

"As someone whose family, friends and neighbours regularly use St George’s I know they do a great job of serving our community and this latest Care Quality Commission Report is reassuring."

CQC’s chief inspector of hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards, said: "We identified a great deal of good practice in this trust - most notably in the critical care service at St George’s Hospital which we rated as Outstanding, and from which I am sure other trusts could learn.

"Patients and their relatives using that service felt that the care was of a high standard, and that they had been involved in decisions about treatment."
