The award-winning crime writer of the Field of Blood and the Garnethill trilogy is giving a talk on her work.

Scottish crime fiction author and playwright Denise Mina has written the trilogy as well as three other books featuring the character Patricia "Paddy" Meehan, a young journalist.

Field of Blood, the first in a series of five books following the career of aspiring reporter Paddy, was made into a BBC television mini-series in 2011.

After completing a law degree, Mina researched a PhD thesis on mental illness in female offenders. It is said that, at this time, she used her academic grant to stay at home to write her first book.

Described as an author of Tartan Noir, Mina won the Theakstons Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year Award in 2012 and 2013 and the Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger for the Best First Crime Novel.

She also writes comics and wrote Hellblazer - the John Constantine series for Vertigo for a year.

Mina is currently adapting Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy as a series of graphic novels.

Her latest novel, The Red Road, begins in 1997 on the day Princess Diana died.  It is a dark story involving child sex abuse and murder, with the redeeming quality of love and the complexity of human nature as key themes at the heart of the book.
