A police operation which uncovered one of the biggest stashes of guns in the capital has been described as ‘worrying’ for the whole of London.

Yesterday morning 30 firearms including an uzi, machine gun and assault rifles were found during a raid on a house in Leyton.

This morning, leader of the Liberal Democrats in Waltham Forest, Bob Sullivan, said that it is not only concerning for residents of Leyton, but the whole of London.

He said: “It is very worrying, especially the kind of weapons that were found.

“I have not heard of this kind of gun being used in Waltham Forest.

“It is worrying for the whole of London. Just because they were here it doesn’t mean they were going to be used in Leyton.

“You don’t keep guns if you do not plan to use them.”

Mr Sullivan said that the council works alongside the police to try to stamp out gang crime in the borough.

Although he says that he is shocked by the find as he was convinced that gang related crime was decreasing.

He said: “I don’t know where the information came from. It could have come from council communications with the police.

“I thought we were on top of the gangs in Waltham Forest. It is an amazing amount of guns.”

A 51-year-old man remains in police custody following the raid.

Police have ruled out terror links.
