Sports students from Redhill's East Surrey College kicked off a fundraising soccer competition which raised hundreds of pounds for a military charity.

The Level 1 students played their charity football tournament at Merstham Recreational Ground recently to raise money for the cause, Honour Our Troops. The charity helps in providing relief to serving and former serving members of the armed forces and their dependents, from hardship, sickness, distress and bereavement. Working with Surrey Football Association and Honour Our Troops, the students organised the event as part of their Working in Sport and Active Leisure unit.

They created marketing materials, organised activity stalls and set up the event on the day. Student Elle Algar was commended by Surrey FA for her outstanding contribution to the organisation of the event, which raised £460 for the cause.

Chris Palmer, chairman of Honour Our Troops, said: “The Level 1 students did a fantastic job organising the event. “It was a great opportunity for them to take on the responsibility of planning and coordinating the activities. They really enjoyed taking part in all of the areas.”

He added: “Raising £460 is such a positive outcome for their efforts and the charity.”
