Plans to turn an area of playing fields into a towing caravan site have been refused planning permission.

Members of Harrow Borough Council’s planning committee last night refused the plans for Broadfields playing fields, in Headstone Lane.

The site owners Harrow Community Sports Ltd submitted proposals to turn the fields into a site with 75 pitches as well as shower and toilet blocks.

The plans were turned down for eight reasons, including being an inappropriate development in the green belt and the loss of playing fields in the borough.

More than 4,200 people signed a petition handed in to the council in February, which called for the land to be used for sport.

More to follow.
