Three men had a “lucky escape” from a blaze at a Catford home in the early hours of this morning (April 9).

21 firefighters and four fire engines were called to Further Green Road at 1.17 am and the flames were under control by 1.56am.

Half of the ground floor was damaged by the fire which three men fled before crews arrived. They were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service staff.

London Fire Brigade watch manager Kevin Quinn, who was at the scene said: “The men had a very lucky escape as there was no working smoke alarm in property.

“It’s absolutely essential that you have a working smoke alarm in your home and test it regularly. They can buy you vital seconds to escape in the event of a fire.”

Firefighters from Lee Green, Lewisham, Feltham and Forest Hill fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
