Far fewer people were injured by potholes in Kingston last year than initially thought, Kingston Council has said.

A Freedom of Information request from ITV News had initially claimed 315 people were injured in pothole-related accidents on Kingston's roads.

But the authority has now said it misread ITV's original question, and in fact the number of pothole injuries was 79.

A council spokesman said: "Having checked the information given to ITN, and due to a simple misreading of the question, it is clear that there were far fewer pothole-related accidents.

"The number of cases of injury reported to the council in relation to accidents caused by potholes during 2013 was 79.

"The figure we gave initially is for all cases of injury reported to the council following an accident on the road or carriageway, not just in relation to potholes.

"We have told ITN this."
