An East Surrey man has been jailed for a year for theft and driving offences.

Lloyd Edwards, 27, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty at South East Surrey Magistrates Court in Redhill to two thefts from dwelling charges and to driving while disqualified.

Edwards was sentenced to 26 weeks' imprisonment for each of the theft charges, which will run consecutively, and 26 weeks imprisonment for driving while disqualified, which will run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay £1,600 in compensation, and was banned from driving for two years.

The first of the thefts happened on February 27, when the court heard Edwards, who although of no fixed abode is believed to have stayed regularly at addresses in East Surrey, walked into a property in Observatory Walk, Redhill, and stole an iPhone.

The second theft related to an incident on March 9, when he entered a garage in Chipstead and stole a number of petrol-powered garden tools.

East Surrey Detective Inspector Paul Gordon, said: "Due to the hard work and dedication of staff and officers, Edwards was identified as a suspect for these offences and was arrested at the earliest opportunity.”

Det Insp Gordon said: "I am pleased that Edwards has been taken off the streets of Surrey for a period of time, and I hope his arrest and the sentence handed to him will go some way to teach him the error of his ways, and remind him and others that Surrey Police will not tolerate criminality in our county.”
