Barnet Council investing extra £5.4million in pothole repairs

This Is Local London: Cabinet member for environment, Dean Cohen, blamed the number of complaints on the size of the borough's road networks Cabinet member for environment, Dean Cohen, blamed the number of complaints on the size of the borough's road networks

An extra £5.4million is being spent on pothole and pavement repairs in Barnet after the borough received the most complaints in the capital last year.

Barnet Borough Council says it has invested the cash after receiving more complaints about potholes than any other London borough in 2013.

The authority blamed the size of its road network for its placing at the top of the complaints table.

And despite the state of the borough’s roads being the number one concern for residents in a recent perception survey, the Conservative-run council insists it is doing enough to tackle the problem.

Councillor Dean Cohen, cabinet member for environment, said: “Barnet is one of the largest local authorities in the country geographically and we have a road network spanning more than 725km, including some major arterial routes.

“These figures very much reflect that, and the fact our residents are proactive in telling us where potholes are so we can get them fixed.

“In response to the residents’ perception survey, we are spending an extra £5.4m on repairs and maintenance of roads and pavements. The total spend for 2013/14 is £8.4m.”

Let's see a breakdown of the money spent on roads and pavements, and make sure that it has been fairly distributed in Labour and Tory wards, shall we?

Nlygo - and DCMD - my 'pathetic comment' is in fact based on an allegation made by your former councillor chum Brian Coleman that Golders Green ward, ie the one represented by Cllr Dean Cohen, has received double the amount given to other wards in the last year. In order to know if there is any truth in this, we need the data, which I have asked for at the last Residents Forum, but was not answered. I would have thought that even you two curmudgeons would agree it is a perfectly valid iquestion to ask.
