A teenager gave up her Sunday to help tired runners come through the finish line at the Kingston Breakfast Run at the weekend.

Gap year student Holly Boag, 17, has been volunteering with Chessington-based race organisers, Human Race, to make sure all running events go smoothly and runners keep hydrated.

The sporty youngster, originally from Scotland who has been staying in Raynes Park, helped out with application forms, making banners and coordinating runners on the day.

She said: “It was nice to be able to say ‘well done, you did it’. The people are so tired – I don’t know if they really notice me but I really enjoy helping. I find it rewarding.

“I decided in my gap year I wanted to do something different and I am quite sporty.”

Gillian McVeigh from Human Race, said: “Holly has volunteered at two of our recent local events and has been a fantastic addition to the team.

“She is willing to get stuck into every task and her enthusiasm for sport shines through. She gave up her time to help as a crew member and she cheered on runners as they crossed the line.”

On being nominated an unsung hero, Miss Boag who has been the athletics captain at her old school, said: “It feel really nice to be recognised.”

The teenager who is a keen runner is also hoping to travel to Carolina in America to teach children horse riding during her gap year.
