More than 100 schoolboys from Richard Challoner School visited major battlefields for a three-day school trip.
As part of the Manor Drive North school’s history curriculum, students were taken to the battlefields of Ypres Salient in Belgium and the Somme in France.
A spokeswoman from the school said: “This year’s trip had added poignancy given that 2014 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the war.
“In history lessons pupils prepared for the trip by studying the causes and key features of the war, and researching local and family history.”
The students also visited cemeteries and war memorials to pay their respects earlier this month.
