A £10,000 prize is up for grabs for someone who submits an anti-Heathrow expansion video in a competition launched by MP Zac Goldsmith and campaign group Hacan.

Entrants need to submit a two-minute video that explains why a third runway should not be built at the airport and shortlisted entries will be judges by a celebrity panel including Hugh Grant and Gyles Brandreth at a gala night at Richmond Theatre on June 18.

Zac Goldsmith said: “A green light for Heathrow expansion is effectively a green light for a vast, foreign-owned and taxpayer-subsidised monopoly on one edge of our great city.

“It is astonishing that the idea is even in consideration, particularly given that freeing Gatwick from the BAA monopoly has worked wonders for the airport and its customers.”

The MP saw thousands of people turn up to a mega rally he organised in April last year to show opposition to Heathrow expansion.

He said: “We should invest in improving London’s surface connections, maximising rather than suffocating competition between three main airports.

“The chancellor needs to stop being led by the lobby groups and think the issue through himself.”

Campaigners are angry the Prime Minister has seemingly backtracked on his promise to voters there would be no third runway at Heathrow.

In 2009 David Cameron told a packed audience at Christ’s School the Conservatives were not backing Heathrow expansion.

He said: “The third runway at Heathrow is not going ahead, no ifs, no buts.”

Chairman of Hacan John Stewart said: “Many people are hugely disappointed that David Cameron has gone back on his promise not to build a new runway at Heathrow. “This no ifs, no buts competition can highlight that.”

The closing date for video entries is June 1.

The gala evening on June 18 is free but limited to 800 spaces.
