The Maldens and Coombe Royal British Legion is calling on businesses and residents to help it commemorate all those who have died in service since the start of the First World War.

The branch needs £4,500 to commission a bronze plaque marking the centenary anniversary of the war in July.

The plaque they hope to unveil in a special ceremony will also pay tribute to those from the borough who have lost their lives serving in the armed forces, police, fire and ambulance services in all conflicts since the war.

Councillor Ken Smith, who is the chairman of the branch, said: “Most of our memorials were erected after the First World War and given the great loss of life understandably so, but the world has changed since then and we need to use this sad occasion to remember the past and present.”

The branch has already collected £1,500.

Bar Malden in New Malden High Street has offered to host a disco while department store Tudor Williams will put on a charity fashion show.

But Coun Smith said: “We are going to find it difficult to get the funding. We want help. We will do everything we can.

“It would be nice to have somewhere for anybody to go in Kingston where they can lay a wreath if the unfortunate happens.”

please keep comet readers up to date on how the donations are going.
if there is any way we can donate a sum of money towards this cause then let us know too . i wouldn't mind if an envelope were to fall on my door mat asking for donations or if an address were given for us to send a cheque to .
the sum needed will be reached if we all pull together on this .
