Schools in Epsom and Ewell are among the best in the country, with their students exceeding national averages.

At a recent meeting of the borough’s local committee of Surrey County Council, it was recognised that schools in the area are outperforming other schools in Surrey and the national averages for Early Years to Key Stage 5 education.

At Key Stage 4, Epsom and Ewell is the highest performing borough in Surrey where the greatest proportion of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and maths.  Three quarters of pupils achieved this against a national average of just six out of ten.

And while more Early Years children are achieving a 'good level of development' compared with their peers nationwide, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils are also exceeding the norm at reading, writing and maths.

In July last year, the percentage of schools in the borough judged to be "good" or "outstanding" by Ofsted rose from 76 per cent in 2011-2012 to 84 per cent.

Local committee chairman Councillor Eber Kington said: "These results show that the education provided by our schools within Epsom and Ewell is amongst the best in the country and I congratulate the teaching and learning support staff for the excellent work they continue to do.

"I would also like to congratulate the pupils and students who have achieved these results, which are testament to the hard work that these young people have put into their learning over the years.

"No-one is being complacent, the Government and Ofsted are ensuring that the requirements on schools are being made more demanding year on year.

"However, the statistics show that in Epsom and Ewell we have the schools, the teachers, the classroom support assistants and the students who are capable of meeting those new educational standards".
