A mob of about 40 to 50 fans fought in the road before an AFC Wimbledon match last month.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the violence at about 2.30pm on February 22 which caused traffic to come to a standstill on the Kingston Road outside the Kingsmeadow stadium.

Acting Det Sgt Valerie Tanner said: "We have made a number of arrests following the disorder but need to identify further outstanding suspects.

"There was a volatile atmosphere on the day in question.

“When violence erupted, officers feared for their own safety as well as the safety of AFC Wimbledon stewards, who had come to their assistance.

“Members of the public were also put at risk and those attending the match with young children, were no doubt shocked and terrified at the level of violence they saw.

"It was clear that the situation was a confrontation between opposing fans as they continually made attempts to reach each other despite police intervention.

“The suspects were spilling into the road and causing hazard and disruption to traffic.

“This situation had great potential to escalate and as well as an appeal for witnesses I am looking for members of the community who witnessed the disorder to contact us, as they may be able to provide us with further information.”

There were about 3,740 fans at the game which Bury won 1v0.

AFC Wimbledon have banned six fans as a result of the violence.

Two men were arrested after the match – one on suspicion of affray and one on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

A third man was arrested in Worcester Park on March 13 on suspicion of violent disorder. He has been bailed to return to a police station in mid-May.

40-50 ?? shocked and terrified ? Volatile atmosphere ? I was there and I don't recognise these descriptions. I suggest Acting DS Tanner cuts out the drama.
