Do you get annoyed by cold calls? And how do you tackle them?

First published in News

Is there anything in modern life more infuriating than being disturbed at home by a cold-caller on the phone who is trying to flog double-glazing or find a victim to complete a tedious lifestyle survey?

Actually, there is one thing which is just slightly more annoying than this – and that’s those maddening pre-recorded messages which come through on mobiles, usually through ‘unknown’ or withheld numbers, advertising PPI or personal injury claim services.

How often are you plagued by unwanted calls to your landline or mobile? Do you answer calls when you’re not sure who’s calling or do you ignore them and try to find out who was ringing afterwards?

Have you ever employed revenge tactics to fight back against the scourge of cold-callers, such as engaging them in inane conversation to keep them tied up for as long as possible? What are your tips either for simply stopping unsolicited calls or getting your own back on nuisance companies?

If they are persistent, I ask them to write to me at the address they have.

With cold callers on the telephone, I start speaking German. If they knock at my house I ask if they can read English, I then point to the sign under my door bell and ask them what does it state " NO COLD CALLERS" If I get junk mail, there is a note on my letter box stating " no junk mail" I return it to their address but without a stamp. If they collect it, they pay a high fee for their own pizza of kebab pamphlet.

It is marginally effective to register with the Telephone Preference Service. Register home and mobiles. The same for junk mail is more effective the Mail Preference Service and yes 'return to sender' soon stops it. If it is a firm of solicitors then get them to write. In the past you could not complain against a solicitor unless you were a client. Now you can so cold calling will get them warned. I went for the 'stopping withheld numbers' from calling and that works now. I get hardly any junk mail, maybe 1 a month from business I already deal with but that is it. Yes, if they call string them along
