This Is Local London: PICTURED: Bexley Village postbox closed because dogs keep peeing on the door PICTURED: Bexley Village postbox closed because dogs keep peeing on the door

A Bexley Village postbox has been shut because dogs are persistently fouling on the door.

Residents living near Albert Road and Hartford Road have erupted in anger because they now have to walk into Bexley village for their nearest postbox.

The sign says 'This box has been closed due to the fact members of the public are allowing their dogs to urinate on the door' and appeared a week ago.

A woman, who lives near the box, said: "I was shocked when I saw the sign had been put up.

"I thought dogs peed on all postboxes.

"I don't see why this one should be closed.

"You don't see workers from BT closing the wiring boxes which dogs wee on as well.

"A lot of people rely on the postbox and it will just make difficult for the residents living nearby.

"The sign has been there for a week. It was a well used box and was always full."

A Royal Mail spokesperson added: "Dog fouling has been an issue for some time at this Bexley postbox.

"The box is sited at the entrance to a recreation area where dogs are let off the lead to run free.

"We have taken the decision to re-locate the box further away and we apologise to customers for the temporary disruption to their service.

"In the meantime, the nearest postboxes are at Parkhill Road and Bourne Road."

Outraged members of the public were heard to say ' where else are we going to let our dogs urinate now? Against peoples wals and property? Lamp posts?
Surely that is why Postboxes exist?

Maybe the resident would like to empty the post from a box covered in dog pee, i'm sure it's a lovely smell and hygienic job.

What a stupid and ridiculous story. Royal Mail need to get a grip. Dogs pee up posts and have always pee'd up postboxes.

Its probably just a ploy to get rid of this style postbox.

Just because dog's have "always pee'd up postboxes" doesn't make it right. Years ago, people didn't clear up dog mess, but these days it's rightly frowned upon to leave dog mess in the street. Rather than you or the affected public criticising Royal Mail, they should be having a go at the dog owners. It's digusting if the person opening up the mail box has to touch dog pee.

There's a big difference between pee and mess. I can't believe I'm writing this.

Dogs pee up lampposts and other such objects. Since the dawn of time. Always have and always will. You can tell this country is going PC nuts when we criticise dogs(and there owners) for doing what they do.
Maybe in Erith they are too posh to pee in public? Are Royal Mail now going to close every postbox in the UK due to dogs weeing up them. Have I really just had to defend dogs weeing????????
Maybe we should get Government grants to train them to use toilets, maybe with their little claw they can flush the chain?

My neighbour once told me she didn't want my cat weeing in her garden.
I told her if she put a sign up I would teach my cat to read.
She never mentioned it again.

There is no excuse for not picking up your dog poo but they will leave their scent where other dogs have previously, like up lamposts, gates and postboxes.
As a dog owner myself it has never occurred to me that dog wee was an issue until I read this article.
The dog walkers in this article are obviously locals so maybe a polite sign on the postbox will make them see the error of their ways and a dog on a lead could always be pulled away before this happens.
