A team of Oatlands School parents are switching the school run for their running shoes to take on a half marathon.

More than 20 runners will take part in the first Brooklands half marathon in Weybridge on Sunday, March 30, and hope to raise more than £5,000 for two causes.

The group, comprising members of the Oatlands PTA, will run the 13.1 miles in aid of the schools extended building works and Little Oaks wards at St Peter’s Hospital.

The team chose to support the children’s oncology unit at the Chertsey hospital in support of former Oatlands School pupil, Harvey Broekhuizen, who had leukaemia diagnosed when he was aged six.

Harvey, now seven, had six months of intensive chemotherapy and is now in remission, but still visits St Peter’s Hospital monthly for treatment.

Julie Martin, from the Oatlands PTA, said: “Many oncology children are so poorly they aren’t allowed to leave their rooms due to the risk of infection.

“For these children we would be like to purchase some additional and more up to date in-room entertainment to try to make their visits a more enjoyable experience.”

The team will also donate some funds to help with the works at the Weybridge school to create a building for small group work as well as a therapy room which will include a sensory room.

Weybridge estate agent Jackson-Stops and Staff are the team’s corporate sponsor and will donate money to the charities the team are running for.
