Work has started on a new housing development set to provide homes for hundreds of people of the site of a former school building.

Epsom Council’s planning committee approved plans for the demolition of the Lintons Centre, on Lintons Lane, Epsom, and its replacement with 85 new homes last July.

The two-storey centre, which after closing as a school was home to community groups such as kids disability club Epsom Phab, is set on a 1.52-hectare site and will be redeveloped to provide 51 private homes and 34 units of affordable housing.

Developer Persimmon Homes Southern has started demolishing the centre and aims to begin the ground work for the new homes later this month.

The development, which will be known as Copthorne Place, will combine one and two- bedroom apartments with a selection of three and four-bedroom houses.

According to the report produced by the council’s planning department last year, the development will have a "traditional design" and contain a mix of two and two-and-a-half storey terraced houses, as well as blocks of flats of three to four storeys high.

A children’s play area will also be included on the site.

Sharon Eldred, head of sales at Persimmon Homes Southern, said initial interest is expected to be high.

She said: "Located within walking distance of Epsom station, the homes will appeal to a range of buyers at various stages of the property ladder.

"Families will benefit from a range of local schools and commuters will find the location very convenient.

"Epsom station, with journey times to London Waterloo in as little as 36 minutes is less than a mile or a 10-minute walk away and Ewell East and Ewell West stations are just a little over a mile away.

"A range of schemes will be available to help buyers secure their new home such as the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme, Home Change and Part Exchange and customers reserving early can secure their preferred plot and personalise their home with fixtures and fittings and options."
