RESIDENTS and local business workers were this morning shocked to see a murder investigation launched in a normally “quiet part of Bromley”.

Yesterday (March 2) at around 10.40am armed police were called to Laurel Court in Cambridge Road to reports of firearms and weapons.

Officers found a 71-year-old man dead at the scene, while a 30-year-old man has been arrested and taken to a south London police station on suspicion of murder.

Jeremy Gauntlett, 52, a partner at estate agents George Proctor opposite the flats, said he was “surprised” and added: “This is a very nice area. This isn’t something you’d think would go on – it’s the first time we’ve heard of anything like this happening.

“All we’ve seen this morning is the police.”

Funeral director manager Brian Connor, 43, from Tunbridge Wells, said the Sundridge Park area is normally “very nice”.

He said: “I’ve worked here for six years and we’ve never seen anything like it around here – it’s quite shocking”.

While a 43-year-old resident of Cambridge Road, who didn’t want to be named, said she was glad a suspect has been caught – and hopes it is the right person.

The full-time mum said: “I’m glad they caught him (suspect) straight away. You imagine they know each other”.
