A new group of UK citizens were created at a ceremony on Saturday.

Kingston’s mayor Councillor Penny Shelton inducted the group at the Guildhall.

Australian Richard Carde, 43, who came to the UK with his family in 2007, said: “Everyone sort of says the various bits all together, and the mayor does a bit of a speech, and that’s it, really.

“It’s quite quick and simple, really, considering what it all means.”

Mr Carde moved back to the UK after a two-year work stint, to give his children the opportunity to travel.

He added: “That’s the sort of drive for it, to get the kids some life experience travelling around the world.”

And Luciana Monaghan, 36, moved from Romania to the UK in 2006 and to Kingston in 2007. She said: “Initially I was thinking it would be a lot smaller – there were a lot of people.

“I love Kingston. It’s very close to London, where I work. There is a lot of green space.”
