Work to repair a bridge in Colliers Wood in memory of Merton councillor Gam Gurung got underway this week, watched by members of the former Ghurka soldier's family.

Contractors moved in to finally complete Bewley Bridge, the so-called 'bridge to nowhere' in Bewley Street.

The bridge was half built in 2007 as part of a commitment by developers Bewley Homes, now Wimpey Homes, but was never finished.

Thanks to a successful bid for funding from Transport for London by Merton Council, The Wandle Valley Trust and transport charity Sustrans, the bridge will now be finished by the summer and named after the Coun Gurun, who died last year aged 53.

Coun Gurung's daughter Susan was joined by former council and military colleagues at the official opening of the works programme this week.

Susan Gurung said: “I am proud of what my father achieved in his lifetime and seeing the works to the bridge begin is very exciting.

"I look forward to the formal naming in the summer.”

Merton Council cabinet member for environmental sustainability and regeneration Councillor Andrew Judge said: “It is great to see this bridge brought to life and I am very pleased that Councillor Gurung’s daughter, Susan Gurung has joined us to mark the start of the works.”
