Woman injured crossing from Tolworth Greenway: 'Just be careful'

A woman left with two metal pins in her ankle after being run over in Tolworth Broadway has urged pedestrians using the Greenway to “just be careful”.

Lorraine Wheeler, 25, of School Lane, Tolworth, tried to cross the road on February 14 near Lorimer’s with her son, Kyle, who was also injured, though not seriously.

She suffered a broken ankle and a ruptured foot, while her son sustained soft tissue damage, she said.

Miss Wheeler added: “The van nearest me stopped but the car in the next lane didn’t see me and hit us.

“I was looking where I was going because I had my eight-year-old son holding my hand.

“People around that area have told me that there have been so many accidents.”

how many more people need to be hit , how many more cars need to crash , how many more cars u turning , how many more near misses , how many more times do the council have to be told that the greenway is a death trap before they do something about this hideous , ugly , pointless , waste of money . we did not want the greenway . we have been proved right that it is a aweful fiasco !!! it is badly designed ( no matter what the designer says , it;s ugly as sin ) , badly built ( sloping subways with steps at the end because the design was ill thought out ) , safe lighted crossings removed and dark green raised bumps put in their place , trees abover the unplaned benches which the birds sit in and poo all over the benches and the benches put so close to the road .
we Tolworth residents could go on and on about all the different problems with the greenway but the council already know that but ignored us . now it's been built it is even uglier and useless than us residence first thought it would be .
T.F.L and the council should hold their hands up and take responsibility for all that is wrong with it and next time listen to the people who actually see it and use it ( not that are many now ) before their hands are blooded with a death !!!

no i'm not and nor are most of us , but i can't see what point you are trying to make when this is a serious matter with the crashes and people getting hurt due to the greenway fiasco .

did she say she dragged the kid across the road ? no , she stated a fact that she looked where she was going and the car didnt stop . there were hardly any accidents before this rubbish was built , but since it opened there have been many in the last few months than the last few years before this rubbish . it should have been left alone !! crash barriers gone , the clue is in the name as to what they are for . drivers from out of town don't know what the dark green bumps are for as the signage is non existant .
we could just use the signal crossing which is what most people are doing now , but when we were told we can cross safely anywhere and then to find out it is not then the whole point of the greenway becomes useless which is what we said all along !!!

What's wrong with the lights that is more safe, you said you had your son with you. You was looking where you was going" that's fine, but u need to look when you cross the road as well as cars and only cross when both cars are stopped along that way.

Anyway I hope the lady and her son makes a speedy recovery.

Everyone should cross where there's signals to, ur find them on all main roads it may mean walking a few meters but these accidents rarely happen when a green man is there????? I feel sorry for the drivers , to many people are lazy to walk that little bit ! But it means they are safe and so are drivers!!!!

For goodness sake, re-instate the barrier in the middle and put back the pedestrian crossings - nothing will improve this eyesore but at least make it safe, and while you're at it get rid of the 'spaghetti western' set at the roundabout as well.

I agree the greenway is ugly but I don't understand how the driver can be blamed for the accident unless the lady was on a crossing managed by traffic lights. The green humps are NOT crossing points - they are there to slow the traffic down. Pedestrians do not have the right of way on these green humps. Yes, you can cross the road at any point but it is down to the pedestrian to make sure that it is safe to cross.

The green humps are crossing points as pinky107 says .They ? decided the whole of the broadway only needed 2 really safe places to cross with lights ,one at the start and one at the end . The planners forgot about the elderly or disabled .I witnessed a group of aprox 10 /11 year old boys run across the A3 roundabout on the green lights (a nasty accident nearly happened).Cars dont often stop on the walkway, and if they do the driver in the next lane wont as they seem to think they will lose their place in the race to get through the lights. Speaking of which seem to turn red as soon as you get to it adding to the polution levels..The horrible seats are to near the kerb edge I watched a passenger jump from his cab and just miss colliding with the seat .The underpass on one side has lost its ramp forcing people to use the light crossing if they cant use the steps .I can go on and on about the waste of money spent . You would think they? would have learnt from the mess made in New Malden high street

What a shame they can't put the cars in a tunnel underground. and reclaim the streets for the people. Its rather awful the cars get right of way when they are passing through instead fo people who are actually living in the area.
No one seems to know how to deal with these dual carriage way monsters the councils are created over time when they go through busy pedestrain areas. There is no doubt they extremely negative impact the area and this green way seems only to have created a free for all spirit.
The facts are non existant in this case (as per usual) but it does seem likely both the pedestrian and the driver were not exercising due care and attention.
