A broken level crossing has left parents and commuters stranded in Ashtead.
A concerned resident, from Ashtead, said the barrier in Woodfield Lane, next to Ashtead Station, has broken down.
She said: "It’s been off and on all afternoon. Everybody is stuck there and it’s bedlam.
"It’s shocking, absolutely shocking in this day and age not to get a crossing right."
Jackie Quinn, from an estate agents in Ashtead, said she is currently in Woodfield Lane and her colleague is stuck on the other side of the crossing.
She said: "It must be a nightmare for parents with young children at school. It's very frustrating and concerning for the safety of those stuck on either side."
She said the crossing has been broken for at least an hour and police are at the scene.
She said: "The barrier is not going up. People are parking up and walking over the footbridge."
