Hardcore punk band Palm Reader will raise the roof in Kingston again next month, writes Kit Sproson.

The Woking quintet played at rock festival Download last summer, and will revisit the Peel on March 22, sampling old and new material.

Off the back of last summer’s success and the band’s upcoming album, scheduled for release this year, guitarist Sam Rondeau-Smith is on a high.

He says: “None of us expected it to be going so well. The crowd [at Download] was amazing. It was a massive occasion.

“It [the new album] is definitely an improvement on the last one.”

Despite Rondeau-Smith’s modesty, their last album Bad Weather received acclaim from the likes of Kerrang! and Rock Sound.

Big Cheese were full of praise too, saying that Bad Weather is “as energetic, frantic, frenzied and violent as their unmissable live shows”.

And despite a change in line-up, Sam says it has been a smooth transition, and they are ready to take on Kingston.

He adds: “We are really lucky that Andy and Dan fitted in really well. Everyone is on the same page.

“They came in about a week before we recorded Bad Weather, and they did well to learn everything so fast.

“We’ve played Kingston before, so we’re prepared and know what to expect.”

The band has played more than 140 gigs since they first got together in 2010, and have been a success abroad too.

Palm Reader have got another busy year lined up, following on from a 2013 that Rondeau-Smith calls “blurry with excitement”.

They will perform at the Rock Sound/Impericon Exposure tour that kicks off in February, playing with We Came as Romans, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!, and the Color Morale.
