ANXIOUS families are waiting for news as passengers from last night's coach crash near Heathrow Airport are treated at Hillingdon Hospital.

A man and a woman were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital following the crash involving a National Express double decker coach just before midnight yesterday on the sliproad leading from the M4 junction 4b to the M25 junction 15.

Hillingdon Hospital's major incident plan swung into action at 12.30 this morning following a call from the emergency services. Under the plan, 60 extra staff including doctors, nurses and volunteers, were called to the hospital.

A total of 37 passengers were taken to the hospital from the scene. Two are seriously injured and are currently undergoing surgery.

Hillingdon Hospital press officer Mark Purcell said 19 other passengers have been discharged following treatment this morning.

The main injuries were fractures and dislocations as well as multiple cuts and bruises and one man has had his arm amputated.

Mr Purcell said another 10 passengers are expected to be sent home today but the remaining six will be kept in.

A further statement is expected from the hospital later this morning.
