A 14-year-old ballet dancer has won the lead role of Nanny McPhee in a new ballet adaptation of the hit children’s film.

Annabelle Adey, from Epsom, beat hundreds of dancers to the role and will perform with the London Children’s Ballet (LCB) as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations.

Emma Thompson, star of the 2005 film, has given her permission, alongside Universal, for the stage adaptation.

Anabelle said: ""LCB has taught me confidence in myself which also helps me with everyday situations.

"You do have to be able to concentrate to pick up the steps, so this has helped me to be focused, but most importantly my experiences with LCB, as well as at my dance school, have given me the drive and motivation to want to become a better dancer, and hopefully one day pursue dancing as a career."

Lucille Briance, Founder and Artistic Director of the LCB, set up the charity in 1994 based on her own experiences trying to find high level dance opportunities for her then 10-year-old daughter.

She said: "It is good for children to be given the time to gain perspective on their ability and commitment to a particular dream; it gives them a chance to make a wise decision over their own future without having an adult close the door on them."

The LCB aims to open ballet up to a new audience. It works with youngsters aged 9-16 for five months, free-of-charge, culminating in a performance.

Nanny McPhee will be performed at the Peacock Theatre, Portugal Street, London, between April 24 and 27.
