Violent winds took their toll in Clapham overnight as a large tree fell on to a block of flats.

Scaffolding was also damaged in Lambourn Road, near Clapham Common, as winds of up to 70mph brought down trees across southwest London and Surrey in the early hours of this morning.

Residents were told to stay away from windows until tree surgeons arrive, while firefighters worked to make the damaged scaffolding safe. No injuries were reported.

Beverley Morrison said she was awoken at 4am to the clattering caused by boards being blown off, and shared these pictures with our readers.
