A former pupil at Nelson Primary School in Whitton is taking steps to raise money for the school he loves so much.

Jon Graham, of Constance Road, is undertaking the challenge of walking from his old school to Admiral Nelson’s HMS Victory in Portsmouth harbour.

The 37-year-old aims to complete his 62-mile task in just 24 hours to raise money for interactive listening stations for the Nelson Road School.

He said: “I went to Nelson as a kid with my brother and wanted to be able to give something back.

“I can’t make cakes at fetes and I’m getting too old to cycle and run but I still wanted to take on a personal challenge, something exciting.

“I have such fond memories of the place and when we looked round the building with my daughter, Isabella, nothing has really changed at all.”

Mr Graham’s six-year-old daughter is currently in year 1 at the school and is one of those who could benefit from the money raised.

The touch-screen learning machines cost about £450 each and the school would like to have nine of them.

He sets off from the school gates at 10am on Friday, April 4, and his roundabout route will take in places such as Woking and Peterfield on his way to the south coast.

He said: “I have been training quite hard and I know just how tough it is going to be.

“It is hard trying to stay awake for 24 hours, let alone walking it - it is a slightly longer route down as obviously the A3 does not have pathways.

“But I wanted to challenge myself to encourage people to get involved and donate so this is what I am doing.”
