Poppy meadows will be sown across the borough to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War.

The commemorative seeds will be sown in six green spaces across Richmond during the spring, with more poppy meadows to be added in other sites in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The six sites will be cultivated between April and May in time for a summer display.

They will include Hampton Common, St Albans Gardens, grass by the hall in Murray Park, Whitton, Manor Road Recreation Ground, Mortlake Green and Old Deer Park.

Richmond Council’s cabinet member for environment, Councillor Pamela Fleming, said: “Growing poppy meadows to mark the centenary of the First World War is a wonderful idea and serves to remember those who lost their lives or were affected by war.

“Richmond is London’s most beautiful borough and these meadows will improve the vibrancy of our green spaces even further.”
