A group of teenagers who challenge negative stereotypes about under 25s in the borough have been nominated for a national award.

Positive Youth News Haringey (PYNH), based in the Selby Centre, Tottenham, is in the running for the John Lewis London Young People of the Year Award 2014.

The awards aim to “reveal, recognise and reward" young unsung heroes across London and winners could take a £2,000 prize to share with the community.

PYNH promotes the achievements of the borough's under 25s and was nominated for its work to challenge negative stereotypes and build better relationships with the adult community.

One of the group’s ten members is 19-year-old Angella Fosuaah, from Tottenham.

She said: “We are very honoured to be up for the young people of the year award.

“It means a lot to us that through our work the achievements of the young people of Haringey are being recognised and broadcast.

“We believe that through this recognition the negative perceptions of Haringey Youth will be erased and replaced with the true reflection of what local young people achieve”

The group’s supporters include Haringey Police Borough Commander Victor Olisa.

The chief superintendent said: “The fantastic young team behind Positive Youth News Haringey have been pivotal in building relations between the police and young people, as well as being huge champions in protecting the reputations of young people."

Last month PYNH won the London vInspired Award 2014 for its community volunteering.
