Redhill has a new boxing champ to cheer on

Redhill has a new boxing champion to be proud of in Ben Davies.
For the 24-year-old mechanic produced the performance of his life to take the vacant Queensbury novice Middleweight title at the Copthorne Effingham Park hotel.
Davies, from Redhill, produced a near punch-perfect performance over the four round contest against fellow title challenger Jamie Andrews on Saturday night (February 8).
He has become the first champion out of the White Dogs boxing gym in Redhill and believes he will be the first of many for the club.
Entering the contest with a reputation as an aggressive come-forward fighter, Davies looked a different beast from the opening round as he patiently stalked Andrews around the ring, applying pressure in short explosive bursts.
As the fight progressed, Andrews failed to capitalise on his height and reach advantages, that had caused Davies some concern before the fight.
Andrews' long shots from the outside failed to rattle Davies, who used power and speed to get inside, where he could unleash a barrage of shots to his opponent's head and body.
As the final bell sounded, it was clear Davies' had finished on top, and master of ceremonies John Atkins confirmed him as the champion.
Talking after the win, the Redhill champ said: “ I was nervous coming into this fight knowing I would have to overcome a big height and reach advantage to land my shots, but I stayed calm and controlled, and the game-plan worked perfectly.”
He continued: “Before the fight I knew if I could keep the pressure on him and not let him settle, I could win the fight, and it feels great to get my hands on that belt for me and the gym, as we had a great training camp for this fight and all the hard work has paid off.”
He added: “Now it's time for a short break, but I will be back in the gym next week, and I’m hoping to make the first defence of the belt in April at the Epsom Downs Racecourse.”
