Films, family workshops and a fundraising talk are just some of the events people can enjoy at the Museum of Richmond this month.
Chartered architect and architectural historian Paul Velluet will explore some of Richmond’s finest examples of modern architecture and landscape design in an informative talk.
Mr Velluet has worked for more than 35 years in building and area conservation, including a period as assistant director of English Heritage London region.
He is a long-term resident of the borough, a former chairman of the Richmond Society, and a former member of the boards of the Museum of Richmond and the Orange Tree Theatre.
Mr Velluet will explore some of the area’s projects completed between the 1950s and the present, including those of distinctive contemporary character and those drawing upon classical tradition.
He said: “The last 60 years have seen the development of a vast number of projects in Richmond, Kew, Ham and Petersham of outstanding architectural quality and significance; many now regarded as of national importance.”
The talk, which will be held at the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene, in Paradise Road, Richmond, on February 24, will raise funds for the museum’s 21st birthday renewal appeal. Tickets between £4 and £8.
A new series of movies at the museum starts with Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which features Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany.
The film tells the tale of a brash British captain who pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America during the Napoleonic wars.
The screening will be held at 5.30pm on Wednesday, February 12. Booking essential; £3 donation welcomed.
Families can delve into the adventures of three explorers with ties to Richmond - Burton, Vancouver and Ball - for half term workshops between February 18 and 21. £4 donation welcomed.
