Mathematicians from Hampton School have been crowned national champions.

The school’s team of four maths whizzes won the UK Maths Trust Senior Team Mathematics Challenge, held in Kings Cross on Tuesday, February 4.

About 4,000 pupils from 1,000 schools across the UK took part in the competition, which promiotes mathematical dexterity, team working and communication skills.

The Hampton team were one of 59 schools in the final, which comprised three rounds testing mathematical ability and speed.

The team, comprising sixth formers Alistair Miller, Andrew Orr and Joshua Rowley, and fifth year pupil Aaron Jones, delivered a near-flawless performance, scoring 177 out of a possible 182 points.

The boys were presented with the winners’ trophy and book each.

Daniel Griller, the boys’ maths teacher at Hampton, said he was very proud of their achievement.

He said: “Ali, Andrew, Josh and Aaron were exceptional and I hope they appreciate the magnitude of their accomplishment.

“Qualifying for the final was a fantastic achievement in itself; becoming national champions is just incredible. I am sure they will remember this day for years to come.”
