Surrey Search and Rescue paid a visit to public service students at Brooklands College to give them an insight into the organisation.

Along with finding out what it is like to be part of a search and rescue team, students presented the volunteers with a donation of £1,526.42 to help buy potentially lifesaving equipment.

Surrey Search and Rescue, made up of 60 volunteers, provides a lowland rescue service which helps the emergency services find missing people and provides support during major incidents and weather emergencies.

Student James Archer, 20, from Hersham, is already a volunteer at the organisation.

He said: “I want to be a Royal Marine when I finish college and this organisation has enabled me to get good experience with using rescue equipment and has also helped to sharpen up my map reading skills, both really important aspects of becoming a marine.”

A Surrey Search and Rescue spokesman said: “We receive no funding from the government and rely solely on donations to purchase and maintain vital lifesaving equipment.

“The money the students raised will go a long way to helping us achieve this.”
