Chopsticks, noodles, lions and dragons were all present as an Epsom school celebrated Chinese New Year.

Downsend pre-preparatory school in Epsom welcomed in the Year of the Horse during a colourful assembly presented by parents of Chinese and Korean students.

Children were shown New Year coins, fortune cookies, rice cakes, costumes and decorations, while the mums told stories and taught them how to say happy New Year in Chinese.

Headteacher Jacqueline Birchall said: "We are really very grateful to Mrs Yu, Mrs Park and Mrs Nae for all the hard work and time they have put into this.

"An important part of the Early Years’ curriculum is to learn about and appreciate a wide range of cultures, and who better to show the children than parents who are part of that culture.

"The children were saying ‘Happy Chinese New Year’ to each other all day, and had great fun completing activities around the Year of Horse in the classrooms."
