A HOMELESS shelter for single men in Ealing is inviting the community to join in with its 30th anniversary celebrations.

Hestia Housing and Support is asking anyone who has resided at Dame Gertrude Young House (DGYH) in the last 30 years to share their experiences.

Stories collected will be used to create a history of the service at DGYH, to be featured at the anniversary summer party on Castlebar Hill.

Visitors will hear from staff and former residents who have gone on to outstanding achievements.

Group manager Thomas Neumark says the service continues to support homeless men with mental health needs. DGYH is currently home to 22 men.

Before ex-resident David, 28* came to DGYH at the age of 24, he spent several months in prison and later at a mental health unit.

He had felt suicidal and would self-harm.

David told me: “Dame Gertrude Young House put a roof over my head and helped me to become independent, especially with taking my medication. I would have been homeless without it.”

After a successful period of readjustment and steady progress, he is now moving into his own flat to live independently.

He plans to enrol on a course to become an electrician.

Since 1984, DGYH has provided homeless single men with temporary accommodation, mental health assessment and support for rebuilding their lives.

Mr Neumark said: “We are hoping to secure funding from local businesses to put up a plaque to commemorate the anniversary.”

If you have a DGYH story or if you are a local firm keen to sponsor the event, call Thomas Neumark on 07837304650 or email Thomas.neumark@hestia.org *We have changed the name, on request, to protect his identity.
