Concerns have been raised over plans from the Mayor of London that could “destroy the character" of part of the borough.

The Mayor of London is currently consulting on making Harrow and Wealdstone a new ‘opportunity area’ to accommodate London’s future growth.

The changes propose a target of building 2,800 new homes and creating 3,000 new jobs in Harrow town centre and Wealdstone.

Currently the area is classed as an 'intensification area’ with an overall target of 1,500 new homes and 2,000 new jobs.

London Assembly Member for Harrow Navin Shah said: “The proposed changes will require close examination to ensure that Harrow and Wealdstone areas don’t end up with unacceptable, badly designed high-rise blocks littering the landscape and destroying the character of the area.

“If the Mayor is serious about regeneration of Harrow town centre he must urgently release funding for the enhanced public transport hub, for improved facilities including step-free access for Harrow-on-the-Hill Station and redevelopment of the current bus station.

“I’ll be closely following the development, obtain views of Harrow’s residents about the proposed changes and lobbying the Mayor to ensure that Harrow gets its fare share of funding and Harrow’s town centre and areas of Wealdstone do not end up being characterless concrete jungle.”

Four other areas have been earmarked in this category as locations for development during the next 25 years: Old Kent Road, Canada Water, Bromley Town Centre and Old oak Common.

Those interested in taking part in the public consultation can do so by clicking here and have until April 10 to have their say.

Too late. Harrow and Wealdstone are already blighted.

London Assembly Member for Harrow Navin Shah said: “The proposed changes will require close examination to ensure that Harrow and Wealdstone areas don’t end up with unacceptable, badly designed high-rise blocks littering the landscape and destroy the character of the area.” Navin Shah has done nothing for Wealdstone. He has been a Harrow Councillor for many years, but has ignored Wealdstone or Harrow. In fact the whole Harrow Labour councillors have ignored Wealdstone. Now there is local election in May 2014, starting to make promises which want be kept after the election.

The same goes to the other political parties in Harrow who have love hate relationship with each other. The worst is that the votes given to Independent Labour Group will not be any different than giving it to Tories who are led by arrogant Susan Hall.
